In Colombia, the gender gap in employment remains a significant challenge. According to figures from the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE), the unemployment rate among women is 16.2% in this first quarter of 2024, compared to 10.5% among men. Additionally, women face greater challenges in accessing formal and well-paid jobs. This inequality is also reflected in the wage gap: women earn on average 17% less than men for equivalent work.
Juanfe has taken on the challenge of addressing these issues through the Employment and Opportunities Center (CEO), a phase of our 360-degree model dedicated to improving the employability and economic independence of teenage mothers. Through training and job placement programs, we are creating a positive impact on the lives of many young women and their families in Colombia.
In the first quarter of 2024, we reported remarkable results at our Cartagena and Medellín locations. In Cartagena, 38 young women obtained their firsts jobs, with 66% earning between 1 and 2 Minimum Monthly Legal Wages (SMMLV). Through CEO, we secured 89 job positions in various sectors, including hospitality, services, and the food service industry. In Medellín, 18 young women obtained their firsts jobs in sectors such as services, commerce, BPO, manufacturing, finance, food, education, and health.
The Employment and Opportunities Center (CEO) not only helps these young women obtain their first job but also provides them with the necessary tools to stay in the labor market and advance in their careers. Thanks to continuous training and support, teenage mothers can aspire to economic stability, which allows them to improve their and their family’s quality of life.
Thanks to the commitment and efforts of allied companies, many young women are achieving economic independence that once seemed distant. Initiatives like the Employment and Opportunities Center are essential to closing the gender gap in employment and ensuring that more women have the opportunity to build a better future for themselves and their families.
